Chelation therapy is an intravenous therapy performed to remove toxic metals from your body. At Auth Vitality: Chelation & Wellness Center of the Rockies, we use ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) administered intravenously (IV) to perform chelation. We can also perform oral chelation to address gastrointestinal heavy metal build up, alone, or in combination with IV therapy.
Chelation works by entering the bloodstream or gastrointestinal tract, binding to metals, excreting it through the urine and stool, and removing it from the body, lessening heavy metal burden and promoting your optimal wellness.
EDTA not only removes metal, but also works to decrease the calcium build up on arteries of the body, especially in the brain, heart, and kidneys. It also decreases overall inflammation through removal of nitric oxide components.
I am so grateful for finding Tara Taylor and having her introduce me to Chelation. I have peripheral neuropathy and the pain in my feet could be unbearable at times. After my first chelation session, I woke up the next day without any pain! Each Chelation has added to the improvement in my overall neuropathy. She has made me a believer that many of our health problems are related to environmental exposures such as heavy metals accumulating in us. I am so happy I did Chelation therapy and will continue to do maintenance to ensure these toxins don’t build up again.

How will I feel during and after therapy?
Chelation therapy is for the most part very well tolerated. Keeping in mind that every patient experience medical therapies differently, some patients report feelings of euphoria, lightheadedness and upset stomach. Much less common side effects include low blood sugar levels, dizziness, and nausea/vomiting. Most often patients are extremely comfortable during their treatment and experienced little to no side effects. Any side effects should be reported immediately to the chelation therapist so they can be addressed.
The clinic is always prepared to address any patient concerns during therapy. We have glucose monitors to check for low sugar levels if lightheadedness or dizziness occurs. We also have nausea medication and stomach acid reducers that can be given IV for any upset stomach, nausea, or vomiting.
After therapy, patients are typically discharged home feeling well and without symptoms of concern. Those cases in which patients remain with any symptoms of concern after therapy, will have those symptoms addressed by the chelation therapist prior to discharge.
Are there people who shouldn’t receive Chelation?
Each patient is carefully evaluated for both risks and benefits of chelation therapy. Patients who report a history of kidney or liver disease will need to be further evaluated to determine the severity of these conditions. Mild kidney or liver impairment may require adjustment in dosing. Severe liver or kidney disease including those on dialysis is a contraindication to therapy. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are also not common candidates for chelation therapy unless toxicity is significant and acute in which therapy is often given in a hospital setting and closely monitored by neonatal specialists.

What causes metal to build up in the body?
Our environment is not as clean a place as you may think. Our earth is surely not as healthy as it used to be years ago. Toxic metals have always been a health risk, but they also build up over time, both in our environment and subsequently in our bodies. When most people think about toxic metals, they think about Lead that is in old pipes and paint. But not only are there many other methods of exposure, but a variety of metals causing illness and poor quality of life.
Many people believe that lead fuels have been banned for years. The truth is that lead fuels have only been banned for motor vehicles. It is unfortunate that it isn’t common knowledge that toxic metals are still readily used in aviation, farming equipment, racecars, marine engines, technology development, chemical pollutants in the medical field, factory emissions, and even cigarette smoking.
Heavy metals, along with other environmental toxins enter our bodies as we breathe them in the air, absorb them through the skin, consuming them in our foods, and drink them in our water supply. Besides lead, other examples of toxic metals in our environment are mercury, aluminum, nickel, arsenic, cadmium, gadolinium, and iron. These are just a few of the metals that can cause harm to the human body. Testing for overexposure, acute and chronic poisoning, is essential to a workup related to symptoms or diseases of unknown origin. With how significant all human exposure is, and how common human suffering from disease is, testing everyone wouldn’t be a bad idea! Most importantly, removing these heavy metals is essential to obtain optimal health.
Why might I not have known about this before?
Despite how serious this issue is, it lacks news attention, and therefore people are relatively unaware of the severity of this issue. We are living in a world where symptoms of chronic illness persist without a known diagnosis, diseases receiving treatment are not improving as expected, less commonly occurring diseases are reemerging, and a lot of people are just not feeling as healthy as they used to. Metal toxicity is too infrequently considered as a cause in western medicine; therefore, these factors are frequently underdiagnosed and extensively undertreated!
The truth about our level of exposure & toxic metals in the news!
The United States began phasing out leaded gas for motor vehicles in the 1970s, and commercial planes and private jets use unleaded fuel. But there remains a serious risk to all our health, as leaded gasoline, otherwise known as “Avgas”, is still being readily used in many industries across the United States.
In the aviation industry alone, leaded fuel is still used in nearly 170,000 piston-engine aircraft across 20,000 airports in the U.S. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that emissions from these airplanes account for about 70% of lead released into the atmosphere! This is how lead gets dispersed into our air, and showers down on our water supply and crops. https://www.epa.gov/newsreleases/epa-proposes-endangerment-finding-lead-emissions-aircraft-engines-operate-leaded-fuel
In June 2023, our congressional House Transportation, and Infrastructure Committee, passed the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) bill by a 63-0 vote, REAUTHORIZING the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to effectively continue the sale and use of leaded gasoline at small airports. https://www.faa.gov/newsroom/faa-industry-chart-path-eliminate-lead-emissions-general-aviation-end-2030. The reasoning behind this is to prevent lead fuel pilots from being stranded, despite the known fact that lead is a powerful neurotoxin and extremely harmful to humans. Though this bill does direct the FAA to develop a plan to change airport infrastructure, to be able to transition to unleaded fuel. But there still exists a serious problem with this. The FAA says that it will take at least 7 years to complete this transition, with a goal of lead free by 2030! https://transportation.house.gov/faa-reauthorization/
Aside from lead aviation fuels, another example of attempts to decrease exposure is that in June 29, 2023, The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) issued a proposed rule to phase out lead ammunition and fishing tackle on eight national wildlife refuges by September 2026 https://www.fws.gov/press-release/2023-06/service-promotes-public-access-hunting-and-fishing#:~:text=As%20previewed%20in%20the%202022,and%20tackle%20by%20fall%202026. Once again, a plan that will take years, too many years, to accomplish this essential environmental toxin exposure source.
This leaves a lot of people, including Dr. Jeff Auth and Tara Taylor asking, “is this an aggressive enough plan?”, And “if we knew lead fuel caused human disease, enough to ban it from vehicles over 60 years ago, then why are we talking about lead free by 2030?! Shouldn’t we have started this process at that time as well?” As with many other health promotion arenas, we are well behind the ball.
How do toxic metals cause damage to the human body?
The current evidence through the clinical trials called TACT trials I & II, show that toxic lead exposure is one of the most significant silent killers from all the above-mentioned conditions, and that an estimated 50% of the U.S., and probably the world, would be considered lead toxic if tested, and suffer from many metal toxic related conditions, and are currently going underdiagnosed and undertreated.
Some of the other common metals causing disease and oxidative stress are aluminum, copper, chromium, gadolinium, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic.
Every organ in our body can be damaged by toxic heavy metals. It is unfortunately common that people are living with many health conditions that are diagnosed as autoimmune or of unknown cause.
What is the cause is underlying exposure to environmental stressors like heavy metals and other chemicals that collectively cause oxidative stress?
Epidemiological evidence shows that metallic and other environmental pollutants contribute to oxidative stress on the body, worsening cardiovascular disease, diabetic glucose control, calcium metabolism contributing to bone diseases like osteoporosis, psychological, joint pain, arthritis, insomnia, erectile dysfunction, neuropathies, central nervous system dysfunction, kidney disease, autoimmune conditions, accelerated aging, and many others.
Heavy metal poisoning can happen suddenly if you are exposed to a significant amount in a short period of time. But the truth is, that most toxic metal poisoning occurs slowly over longer periods of time, as we are continuously exposed to low levels in our environment, as explained above.
And it is not just metals that are causing increased oxidative stress and disease in the body. We are exposed daily to ozone, aldehydes, carbon monoxide, and many other consumed and inhaled toxic particulate matter. We have many therapies that address various environmental toxic exposures, and can combine these therapies based on test results, patient symptoms, and underlying conditions.

What are the symptoms of toxic metal poisoning?
The most common symptoms of toxic metal poisoning are:
- Peripheral Nervous System:
- Neuropathies (tingling, numbness, or pain in the extremities and other areas of the body)
- Central Nervous System:
- Brain fog, memory loss, tremors, balance problems
- Cardiovascular system:
- Heart palpitations from arrythmias: for example, Atrial fibrillation, High Blood Pressure, and heart disease
- Gastrointestinal System:
- IBS, food sensitivities, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation
- Renal system:
- Kidney disease
- Musculoskeletal Problem:
- Bone disease: Osteoporosis (brittle bones)
- And others such as: Immune dysregulation, chronic fatigue, unexplained weight loss, and easily prone to recurrent infections
What happens during the process of evaluation and treatment of metal toxicity?
At Auth Vitality: Chelation & Wellness Center of the Rockies, we are focused on a whole-body individual approach. No two patients are the same. This is why we always begin with an in-depth medical history including patient symptoms of concern, chronic diseases, medications, allergies, and all potential exposures to metal toxins.
We will then collect data through blood and urine testing, to tell us what metals are involved, and at what toxicity level. We will use this data to rule out other causes of symptoms and diseases, as well as identify the level of toxic metal burden. We additionally test liver and kidney function prior to treatment decisions. All these things will guide our individualized treatment plan.
We will discuss the risks and benefits and if deemed appropriate, through shared decision making, we will provide IV Chelation therapy with high quality EDTA calcium and support these therapies with other vitamin and mineral infusions. We will also discuss other antioxidative therapies available, and how they can augment your treatment plan.
You will be tested after your treatment to evaluate the outcome through repeat toxic metal testing. And of utmost importance, is assessing your symptom improvement post treatment, and creating an ongoing treatment plan to support you post therapy. This can include periodic maintenance chelation, and oral vitamins, minerals, and supplements.
Once we have reduced the toxic metal burden on your body, your immune system will be free to identify areas that need attention and be able to fully work to repair these organ systems.
The Problem of Access to Treatment!
One of the problems is that there is often limited availability of providers and clinics providing this service across the country. We are very proud to bring these services, and many others, to improve the health and wellness of our mountain community, and those who travel from anywhere to receive our services. Here at Auth Vitality: Chelation & Wellness of the Rockies, we are happy to meet with you and perform an intake, recommended testing, and indicated treatment regimens. Your wellness is our main priority, and we are excited to see you obtain optimal health.
